While you’re enjoying your cashews, we thought you might want to learn a little bit about where these great snacks come from. Cashews are actually the true fruits of the cashew tree, which is also known as Anacardium occidentale. Native to northeastern Brazil, this plant gives us the cashews that we know and love.
Where do cashews come from?
When you first look at the fruit of the cashew tree, you might not be able to recognize the cashews. That’s because the “fruit” of the cashew tree is actually an oval or pear-shaped accessory fruit (also known as a false fruit) that develops from the flowers on the tree. The flowers also produce a fruit known as the cashew apple. Cashew apples are about five to eleven centimeters long, and they ripen into a red or yellow fruit. This fruit is edible and it has a strong and sweet smell and taste—but the skin is fragile, so it isn’t suitable for transport. We may miss out on cashew apples, but we can still enjoy delicious cashews!
Cashews are a kidney or boxing-glove shaped drupe that grows from the end of the accessory fruit on the tree. Within this fruit is a single seed—and that’s where you’ll find the delicious cashews. It might seem like a lot of work, but like all good things in nature, it’s well worth it.
